Mrs C Fisher - Assistant Headteacher

It has been wonderful this week to welcome our international visiting students from Kerui School, Nanjing, in eastern China.

The Mountbatten buddies from Year 7 and Year 8 have been a credit to their parents and the school as they welcomed the Chinese students, starting on Monday morning with a guided tour of the school.

Our students are living proof that language proves no barrier to friendships forming, as we have seen laughter and joy across the school site, both in classrooms and on the playground. We've heard greetings of "你好(nǐhǎo)" as doors have been opened and we've felt the passion and infectious curiosity to find out more about each other's culture and way of life.

These compassionate young leaders alongside our whole school community, have discovered and embraced different cultures and nationalities in ways that have promoted meaningful and lasting understanding and respect.

Look out for the photos and highlights in next week's newsletter! If your son or daughter would like to develop their leadership skills by participating in the Mountbatten International Buddy Scheme in the future, please send them to see Miss Roodt.

Congratulations must also be extended to our Year 8 Student Ambassadors who continued to demonstrate their maturity and excellent communication skills when showing prospective parents around the school again this week. The feedback on your ambassadorial skills has been highly impressive!

What is Sparx Maths?

Sparx Maths Homework is an online learning platform that creates personalised maths homework for students aged 11-16.

We believe that practice makes perfect (and permanent!), so each week, your child's teacher selects the topics that have been taught recently in class and Sparx Maths builds a personalised set of questions to match your child's current level of understanding. Each homework will also include consolidation of topics covered earlier in the year and in previous years so that topics that haven’t been seen for a while aren’t forgotten, thereby strengthening long-term memory retention.

Our aim is for all children to strive for 100% completion of their homework, since it is set at just the right level for them. Each question has a short video tutorial to help your child if they are stuck.

Teachers receive powerful insights from Sparx Maths each week, identifying topics on which students required multiple attempts or needed more time. Sparx Maths then generates follow-up questions that teachers use in class to expose any lingering misconceptions and fill any gaps in understanding.

External research has found that using Sparx Maths leads to significantly better progress and improved grades. By consistently using Sparx Maths, your child can build a solid foundation in maths and achieve their full potential.

How does Sparx Maths make sure difficulty levels are correct?

Our aim is to provide personalised, challenging and attainable homework that every child can complete each week, using the support videos where necessary. We constantly monitor homework, so we can match your child's understanding.

By progressing through each homework on their own, with the support from you and their teacher when needed, your child will have the best opportunity to answer 100% of the questions correctly.

How can I help my child with their Sparx Maths Homework?

We believe your child can answer all of the questions correctly in their homework, but we know there may be times when they struggle, so how can you support your child with their homework?

Our top three tips for you and your child when using Sparx Maths...

  • Encourage them to tackle it on their own
  • Nudge them to use the support videos (teachers can see if they have used them!)
  • Suggest that they start early to give plenty of time to seek help if they need it.

If your child requires further help, we have recently launched Sparx Maths support sessions which run at morning break in B1 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

RSHE (Relationships, Sex, & Health Education) is taught by Tutors to their Tutor Group once a week. Tutors deliver discussion-based lessons which allow our students to explore a range of topics to effectively prepare our young people for success in the modern world with the knowledge, understanding and desire to keep themselves safe, happy, healthy, respectful and tolerant. Our aim is to empower them with the resilience and confidence to make a difference to their own and others’ future.

Year 7

This half-term, Year 7 will be looking at how to deal with starting secondary school, dealing with change and how to develop more self-confidence. They will also explore how friendships form, may change and develop as well as how communication is a valuable tool to manage friendships. Year 7 will then look at how to show empathy, compassion and care.

Year 8

Year 8 will be starting with identifying their personal strengths and achievements. They will then explore personal safety and move on to looking at the meaning of discrimination and prejudice and what protective characteristics are. After this, they will learn about Black History month and gender identity before discussing attitudes towards mental health.

Year 9

Year 9 will be looking at what a healthy relationship is and how to recognise the features of them. They will explore the meaning of commitment within a range of different relationships and the meaning of consent. Once they understand the meaning of consent they will consider the types of freedom and capacity to consent before moving on to exploring families, marriage and changes within relationships and families.

Year 10

Year 10 will be discussing the values required to secure positive relationships and what choices each individual has within their relationships. This includes intimate and platonic relationships, in-person and online. Negative behaviours such as pressure and coercion is then covered to build on the consent lessons delivered in Year 9. Victim blaming and positive role models are then explored.

Year 11

Year 11 will be exploring stereotypes and individual identities, including gender. They will consider their own ambitions and aspirations before hearing from some colleges in readiness for their post-16 applications. They will then recap the need for good sleep hygiene and how to deal with different emotions ahead, in the context of the exam year ahead.

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

We have our reporting system 'TootToot', where students can report anonymously or with their name.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.
