We have been delighted to see the excellent start that Year 11 have made to their final year at Mountbatten and we're confident that their results next summer will be as amazing as the results were in the summer just gone.
A few weeks ago, Mr Waters, our Head of Year 11, launched our Prom points system with his year group. Prom points are used to reward the things that we know will lead to GCSE success, and every student needs to achieve 250 before the final May half-term in order to get a Prom invitation. This might sound like a large number, but last year, over 90% of all students achieved their 250, with many achieving over 1000! Most students will be like my daughter. They'll have done those things anyhow and going to the prom will be a happy and inevitable reward. Other students, maybe more like my son(!), need a little 'encouragement' to do those things that we all know will lead to success in the summer. This is a way for us to clearly link positive attitude and effort with reward, and to encourage all students to do their best. Prom points are updated every week and uploaded to epraise so that students and folks at home can see how they are progressing. Students who are possibly falling behind are supported and encouraged to 'turn it around'.
One of the key ways for students to get points is to develop good homework habits. We know that doing homework has a significant, positive effect of future success, so we've chosen to make every epraise point gained from doing homework 2 Prom points AND every demerit gained from not doing homework losing 2 Prom points. Even if your child is not in Year 11 yet, it will be really helpful to support them to complete homework on time and to a good standard.
Year 11 have made an amazing start: Some have already achieved 100, and over half of the year group have 60 or more. Students ought to be able to pick up a maximum of 80 Prom points from each time monitoring goes home, so Year 11 are well on their way!

Congratulations to twelve Year 9 Computer Science students who took part in Ada Lovelace Day on Tuesday 8 October at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. The girls successfully saved the SS Ada Lovelace from crashing into Mars by coding new communication, life support and landing systems for the "spaceship" using Arduino microcomputers. They also got to tour the laboratory's Scientific Computing department where data from CERN in Switzerland is stored, and got to hold Trevor, a four-billion-year-old meteorite! The girls were an absolute credit to the school and impressed the computer scientists with their skills. Well done to:

Together we can inspire bright minds from all backgrounds to access opportunities in our industry. At BAE Systems we serve, supply and protect those who serve and protect us – and provide opportunities for our 5,500 apprentices and graduates in learning to find a place to build meaningful careers.
About our Apprenticeship Programmes
Our wide range of apprenticeships are designed for students of 16 years or over who have, or are about to, complete GCSE’s, A-levels or equivalent.
Through study modules, hands-on experience, and dedicated mentorship, they’ll earn professional qualifications equivalent to further GCSE’s, A-levels, foundation degrees or even a full bachelor’s degree in their chosen area – all while earning a salary.

Join us – and embrace the opportunity for a brighter, better and more secure tomorrow.
Our apprenticeship insight event introduces BAE Systems, engineering, and our early careers programmes.
Taking place over four days throughout January & February 2025, students will have the opportunity to learn more about us, gain hands on experience, and visit our sites. There will also be opportunities to meet our current engineering apprentices, who will provide insights into their role and share their experience.
Following the experience, students could be offered a full-time position on one of our engineering apprenticeships, starting in Autumn 2025.
Last week we welcomed 24 students and 3 staff from the Kerui School in Nanjing, China to The Mountbatten School for the first global exchange of the academic year. Each visiting student was paired with one of our Year 7 and Year 8 Mountbatten Buddies for the week, following their timetable and getting involved with class and after-school activities. Our Mountbatten Buddies demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills to make our guests feel welcome and supported. We would also like to thank students across the school who took the time to get to know our guests and greet them each day in Mandarin. It was wonderful to see our international ethos in action and our guests commented on how warm and welcoming our students and staff were throughout the week.
We have several global exchanges coming up this academic year. If you would like to get your child involved to give them the experience and opportunity to develop their communication, leadership and problem-solving skills with their peers around the world, please encourage them to complete this Google Form.
Eco-Schools Award
We are proud to announce that our Eco-Club has secured the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award following their work to promote a more sustainable environment on our school site. The students collaborated with the Geography, Art and Technology departments to improve biodiversity by building bug houses as well as raising awareness around environmental issues with students and staff. Through this work, students have developed an environmental ethos with sustainability at its heart, which they will continue to build upon this year. The group is excited to see what projects this year will bring and to involve more members of the school community.
A huge well done to all those involved. Keep a look-out for the green flag flying from our flagpoles in the next few weeks!
If you are interested in getting involved in the Eco-Club and being part of our mission to create a more sustainable environment, join us in J6 after school on Thursdays. See you there!
RSHE (Relationships, Sex, & Health Education) is taught by Tutors to their Tutor Group once a week. Tutors deliver discussion-based lessons which allow our students to explore a range of topics to effectively prepare our young people for success in the modern world with the knowledge, understanding and desire to keep themselves safe, happy, healthy, respectful and tolerant. Our aim is to empower them with the resilience and confidence to make a difference to their own and others’ future.
Year 7
This half-term, Year 7 will be looking at how to deal with starting secondary school, dealing with change and how to develop more self-confidence. They will also explore how friendships form, may change and develop as well as how communication is a valuable tool to manage friendships. Year 7 will then look at how to show empathy, compassion and care.
Year 8
Year 8 will be starting with identifying their personal strengths and achievements. They will then explore personal safety and move on to looking at the meaning of discrimination and prejudice and what protective characteristics are. After this, they will learn about Black History month and gender identity before discussing attitudes towards mental health.
Year 9
Year 9 will be looking at what a healthy relationship is and how to recognise the features of them. They will explore the meaning of commitment within a range of different relationships and the meaning of consent. Once they understand the meaning of consent they will consider the types of freedom and capacity to consent before moving on to exploring families, marriage and changes within relationships and families.
Year 10
Year 10 will be discussing the values required to secure positive relationships and what choices each individual has within their relationships. This includes intimate and platonic relationships, in-person and online. Negative behaviours such as pressure and coercion is then covered to build on the consent lessons delivered in Year 9. Victim blaming and positive role models are then explored.
Year 11
Year 11 will be exploring stereotypes and individual identities, including gender. They will consider their own ambitions and aspirations before hearing from some colleges in readiness for their post-16 applications. They will then recap the need for good sleep hygiene and how to deal with different emotions ahead, in the context of the exam year ahead.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot', where students can report anonymously or with their name.
Please note all calls both to and from the school are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.
