As we approach the mock examinations starting in January 2025, I’d like to take this opportunity to share some helpful revision tips for both students and parents. The GCSEs are 2 years in length and are purposely designed so that revision is throughout, rather than simply at the end of the course.
The Forgetting Curve illustrates how quickly we lose information unless we revisit it, which is why tools like mind maps and flashcards are so effective for strengthening long-term memory. If your child hasn’t yet set up a revision timetable, now is the perfect time to get started. There are many excellent free resources available online to help plan what to revise and when.
Encourage your child to break their revision into manageable chunks and mix up subjects to maintain focus and momentum. With a bit of consistency, revision can become a natural part of their daily routine.
With 8 to 10 different GCSEs to prepare for, students should gather their notes, books and resources for each subject in an organised way, using separate folders or piles. It’s also essential they know their exam boards and access past papers online—teachers are always there to help with this if needed.
In summary, encourage your child to:
Stay organised.
Ask questions and seek clarification.
Self-quiz and practice tests.
Prepare thoroughly with the right resources.
Work in a quiet, focused environment.
Break revision into smaller, manageable chunks.
We wish all of our students every success as they begin their preparations for the upcoming exams.

Year 11 CRY Heart Screenings
On Wednesday, we welcomed the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) mobile heart screening unit to carry out a free cardiac screening session. In total, 100 students and staff were screened, with 5 screenings resulting in minor irregularities being noted worthy of contacting GPs to recommend a follow-up investigation.
During the lunch break, the CRY doctor, nurses and administration team commented warmly about how they 'had such a lovely morning chatting to the kids'. The whole team agreed when one of them said 'you hear such negative things about teenagers, but they have been interested and a pleasure to be with today.' We are so proud that, yet again, our students were a credit to the school and to you as parents.
The private Mountbatten biennial heart screening is made possible only by the continued association with the Phil Standing memorial fund - the £6500 being raised by students, staff and friends of Sue Fisher (Phil's mother). Sue spent the day in school chatting with students, and it was Sue who reflected that this is likely to have been the first time many of them have been to a medical appointment by themselves - she was hugely impressed by how calm and confident they were.
Phil, a former Mountbatten student, sadly died of sudden cardiac failure in 2012. This is the fifth time a screening has taken place at Mountbatten as Sue still feels such a link to the school where Phil spent his teenage years. Sue tells how, following the tragic event of Phil's death and after spending time supporting his widow with their 22-month-old twins, the first person who knocked on her door to check on her when she returned home was Phil's Mountbatten tutor - having left school 14 years earlier.
If you would like to know more about the background to this legacy, read Phil's story here.

We’re thrilled to announce the start of the Year 7 Spelling Bee for our French and Spanish students! This competition will unfold over four exciting stages: class, school, regional, and national finals. At the regional stage, three top spellers will have the chance to represent our school at Southampton University!
To start, we’ll focus on the class competition, taking place in the last week of term. All Year 7 French and Spanish students will participate, and their homework will include learning essential vocabulary. Mastering these words will not only help them in this competition but will build a solid foundation for their future language studies.
More details will be provided by your child's language teacher, and we encourage parents to check Google Classroom for updates and to support students with their preparation at home! The goal is to learn the meaning first, then the spelling in the target language.
Good luck to all our Year 7 linguists—let’s make this a fun and rewarding journey!

Last half-term in RSHE, students made a great start to their discussion-based lessons where they explored a range of topics. The lessons are taught in tutor groups once a week. Teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.
Students will be exploring healthy living this half-term. They will be identifying what type of lifestyle they lead by considering their diet and exercise habits. They will also consider dental hygiene and pressures from the cosmetics industry. Energy drinks and caffeine will also be discussed, as well as the importance of sleep and brain development. Vaping will be the final topic in this healthy living series and we hope students will recognise the known and unknown risks associated with e-cigarettes.
Year 8
Students will be exploring the online world this half-term. They will be considering the impacts of social media and their responsibilities when it comes to online activity. They will also discuss the stress that can come with managing various online platforms and how media sources can have bias, misinformation and disinformation and it is therefore important to validate the information they view.
Year 9
Students will be exploring internet safety this half-term. They will consider how to use the internet safely and appropriately, as well as identifying what digital resilience is and how to develop it to keep themselves safe and happy. Students will also be completing their #beewell surveys this half-term, which will provide us with an insight into the mental health and wellbeing of our students, which helps inform our RSHE themes and in school support.
Year 10
Students will be exploring mental health and wellbeing this half-term. They will consider who are role models and what they may aspire to be like now and in the future. They will also consider how to reframe negative thinking to take a more positive approach to challenges and ways in which they can support mental and emotional wellbeing, including mindfulness and signposting on how to access quality support and guidance if ever needed.
Year 11
Students will be completing some Emergency First Aid training which will lead to a St John’s ambulance certificate if students fulfill the practical elements of the session. Students will also explore peer pressure and ways to manage it as well as discussing risky behaviours and lifestyle choices such as substance abuse.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
We have our reporting system 'TootToot', where students can report anonymously or with their name.
Please note all calls both to and from the school are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.
