Mr S Osbourne - Director of Sports Academy

Year 10 work experience week is an exciting opportunity for students to step into the world of work, gain valuable experience, and see first-hand what a career in their chosen industry might look like. This is their chance to develop new skills, build confidence, and understand the expectations of a real working environment.

To the Year 10s: Take this time to ask questions, observe professionals in action, and embrace every task given to you. Whether this experience confirms your career aspirations or opens your eyes to new possibilities, it will be an important step in shaping your future. Show enthusiasm, work hard, and make the most of this opportunity—you never know where it might lead!

We look forward to hearing all about their experiences when they return. Best of luck!

Medical Room Procedures

A reminder that students are not permitted to use their phones to call home independently for medical reasons. This policy is in place for safeguarding purposes, ensuring that all communication is properly managed through our staff.

You will be notified via email if your child visits the medical room due to illness or injury. If your child needs to contact you regarding their health, we will call you directly. If we feel that your child needs to be collected from school, we shall contact you by phone.

If you are aware that your child is not feeling well before school, please could you notify us of the concern with a note in their student organiser, along with any action you would like us to take. Otherwise, our priority will be to keep students in school.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Congratulations...

Congratulations to Tommy H 7EHK and Charlotte H 8JAD who won the Centre for Personalised Medicine 2025 Art Competition. This was advertised in our newsletter in the autumn term.

Their piece, called ‘What We Carry’, was a photographic response to the environmental impact of personalised medicine. Please find the picture below.

Empowering Girls Through Fitness  Boxercise Sessions

B-Fit is offering the  opportunity to encourage more girls to stay active and build confidence through fitness. Studies show that by age 14, girls drop out of sport at twice the rate of boys, often due to a lack of confidence, fear of judgment, or feeling that sport isn’t for them. See below information from B-Fit.

At B-Fit, we are passionate about changing this! Our Girls-Only Boxercise sessions offer a fun, supportive, and non-intimidating way for girls aged 10-15 to enjoy fitness. They can train alongside a parent/carer, learning boxing drills in a safe, non-contact and uplifting environment. Adults are also welcome to join solo!

We’re offering a free trial session to encourage more girls to give it a go.

📍 Location: Mountbatten School Romsey
📅 Day & Time: Mondays at 6.30pm

💰 Free trial available – sign up here: Links - B - Fit

Breakfast Club

As we approach the lighter mornings of the Summer Term, we just wanted to remind you that Breakfast Club will finish on Friday 4 April. Therefore, students won’t be able to access this provision, which was generously funded by the test Valley Community grant received by the school. Thank you to all staff members who gave up their time to make this happen. If you are particularly struggling with the cost of living and would like the school to support you in accessing any additional funding, please contact lyn.lovell@mountbatten.school.

This week, the final preparations for work experience took place with an assembly led by our Enterprise Advisor, Melanie Trenchard. Students were also reminded to reach out to Mrs Shakya in the Careers Department if they encounter any issues during their placement.

Year 7 Employer Talk

Over the past few weeks, Year 7 students have been exploring various companies and organisations across the private, public, and third sectors during their weekly careers lessons. On Wednesday, they had the opportunity to hear from Gillian Wilkins, who works for the baby bank ‘Baby Necessities’ in Romsey.

Gillian shared her career path, discussed her passion for working with a charity, and explained the vital role the charity plays in the community. She also gave students a behind-the-scenes look at how donated items are sorted and organised, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the entire process.

The Book Fair is Here!

From Monday through all next week, the book fair will be open to all students at lunchtime and after school in the library. We have a fabulous range of books available to purchase from Scholastic, including the sensational Sunrise on the Reaping, the long-awaited prequel to The Hunger Games. This is the perfect opportunity for students to discover fresh reads, explore new genres, and build their personal library.

How to pay

When it comes to payment for the book fair, please select one of the following options:

  • Pay with gift vouchers – You can purchase pre-paid gift vouchers through the scholastic website that can then be printed and used by the students at the fair by following this link: https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/gift-vouchers
  • Pay direct – Students visit the fair and fill out a wish list form. These can then be taken home and paid for online by following the link. Please ensure you return your wish list to school before Monday 7 April 9.00am https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/pay

Please note that students may also use their £1.00 World Book Day token against any title at the Book Fair. Simply take the cost of £1.00 off your order total at the checkout.

Winners of the Cover Design Competition

A huge congratulations to Wynne G 7OWS for winning our cover redesign competition this week with his rendition of the Godzilla: King of Monsters cover. Wynne’s fantastic and colourful efforts have earned him £15.00 worth of vouchers to spend at the fair. Well done, Wynne!

Also, a special mention to James K 7TDN, our runner-up, for his brilliant redesign of the Star Wars: Phantom Menace cover. James has also earned himself some vouchers to spend at the fair.

RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.

In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.

  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) (Secondary) - GOV.UK
  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education - GOV.UK
  • Understanding Relationships, Sex and Health Education at your child's secondary school: a guide for parents - GOV.UK

Year 7

This half-term Year 7 will be exploring puberty, looking at the process of physical and emotional changes that occur as children grow into adults, considering the different ways puberty affects boys and girls. They will go on to identify what influences they have around them and how to maintain appropriate behaviours during adolescence.

Year 8

This half-term Year 8 will be exploring healthy relationships, consent and intimate relationships with an introduction to contraception. They will also consider online safety and relationships.

Year 9

Year 9 will begin the New Year considering what a healthy relationship is, what it means to be committed to relationships, including intimate ones. They will also explore different contraceptives and discuss STI’s and how they are transmitted.

Year 10

Year 10 will be exploring influences around them and peer relationships. They will consider the impact of gang culture and the risks of County Lines and drug activity. They will then prepare for the start of their work experience.

Year 11

Year 11 will be completing their last topics of RSHE before developing study and revision skills ahead of the GCSE exams. The final lessons include Self-examination, sexual health and medical appointments and pregnancy.  Videos supporting the self-checking sessions include: Check Your Pair – A How-To Guide and https://vimeo.com/29898544

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

Our message reporting system 'TootToot', can also be used to request support or report a concern.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.

Part of the healthy living topics include discussing the need for good sleep habits. Support with teenage sleep can be found at Teen Sleep Hub, which is part of The Sleep Charity.
