As the sunshine has finally made its appearance and spring fully blossoms around us, it's wonderful to see our students enjoying the newly opened field during break times. After months of being confined to other areas during the muddier weather, there's something truly heartening about watching them spread out across the green space, enjoying the fresh air and freedom it provides. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a fantastic resource, and it's a joy to see it being used so enthusiastically and responsibly.
This coming week marks both World Earth Day and World Habitat Day – timely reminders of the importance of protecting our natural environment and the spaces we all share. As our students reconnect with our own small patch of nature during breaks, it's a perfect opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the planet and our responsibility towards it.
For our Year 11 students, this period brings added significance as they prepare to begin their GCSE examinations. We know this can be a challenging time, and we are immensely proud of their dedication and resilience. Our Year 10s will also be experiencing formal assessments as the end of the school year approaches. Please do encourage your children to balance their revision with time outdoors – research consistently shows that fresh air and natural surroundings can significantly benefit focus and wellbeing.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our school community.
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

Hay Fever
As we step into the vibrant blossoming season of spring, we want to ensure that every child at our school can fully embrace the wonders of this time. However, with the beauty of spring comes the challenge of hay fever for many of our students.
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, can cause discomfort and disrupt learning if not managed effectively. Symptoms such as sneezing, itching, nasal congestion and watery eyes can impact your child’s ability to focus and participate in class activities.
To support our students during this season, we kindly ask parents to ensure that your child has access to appropriate hay fever medication. Whether it’s antihistamines, nasal sprays, or eye drops, having these medications readily available can make a world of difference in managing symptoms and allowing your child to thrive academically and socially.
Additionally, please remind your child to practise good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and avoid rubbing their eyes, to minimise exposure to pollen and other allergens.
Thank you for helping us to create a healthy and supportive learning environment for all our students. Together, we can ensure that every child can fully enjoy the wonders of spring without the discomfort of hay fever holding them back.
Celebration Days - End of Summer Term
This week we sent letters to parents/carers regarding the Celebration Days for each year group that will take place at the end of the summer term. Please indicate on the Google forms (embedded in the letters), whether your child wishes to attend.
Please note that the MEP China Trip clashes with the Year 9 Celebration Day.
If you are the parent or carer of a child who was previously looked after (this is anyone who has been in the care system and now resides with you under an adoption process or similar) there is support available in school to help ensure your child has the maximum opportunity to reach their full educational potential.
Please email Natalie.Harper@mountbatten.school if you would like to know more about what we can do to support your child's educational progress and achievement.
This is voluntary information sharing and will be handled with sensitivity; we would request documentation of the adoption order or similar, which would be kept securely and confidentially.
#So.me - Invitation to participate in daily wellbeing and social media study
We have an exciting opportunity for students to take part in cutting-edge wellbeing research. The #So.Me team at the University of Manchester are conducting a study to understand how young people feel over the course of two weeks. They will be sent daily wellbeing questionnaires via a secure smartphone app outside of school hours. Alongside this they will ask some questions about social media use and experience. Students aged 12-16 who use social media are eligible to participate.
The study is running between now and mid-July 2025. Taking part will take approximately 2-3 hours of your child’s time in total over the course of 2 weeks. They’ll receive an Amazon e-voucher as a thank you for taking part.
Your child will be part of a group of hundreds of young people across the UK and will be critical to ensuring that young people’s views and experiences are central to wellbeing research.
The study has already been introduced to students during school. If your child is interested in taking part, please click on the button below to read the full study information and provide consent. You will need to provide parental consent and your child will need to provide assent for them to be able to take part.
Direct4logos will be closing at 2.00pm on Friday 2 May and will re-open at 9.30am on Tuesday 6 May.

esports
On Tuesday 29 April, Mountbatten's esports team took part in the final of the Williams Racing Student Racing League (Split 3) at the F1 team’s HQ in Grove. Our team were treated to a talk about esports careers, a tour of the Heritage Museum - including all of the championship winning cars! - and a chance to take part in STEM activities before the big race.
Mountbatten’s drivers Ollie and Casper pushed hard throughout and even led at one point, eventually finishing 2nd and 3rd to end the season third in the team standings. Considering this was our first season in esports, against colleges and universities as well as other schools, the entire team can be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved in such a short space of time!
We look forward to doing even better next season while also introducing other games such as Rocket League to our esports offering.
Click the drop-down menus below to find out more about different careers opportunities coming up for our students.
RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.
In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.
Students have been discussing what a diverse society looks like and what the protected characteristics of the equalities act are. This has led to identifying and challenging stereotypes and what discrimination is. Students are also exploring what prejudice and bias looks like within the media and how they can research and find their own facts. Students are also identifying who their role models are and what influences they have upon them, as well as how to manage peer pressure. This leads on to exploring how to keep safe within society and within relationships.
Year 8
Students have been busy identifying what constitutes a healthy relationship and discussing how to form positive and healthy new friendships. This moves onto exploring their online activity and behaviours with the aim to reduce online risks and develop their digital resilience. Students also explore the importance of human rights and responsibilities within society, the school environment and the workplace and how to challenge discrimination. They will also discuss lifestyle choices by considering the risks and effects of alcohol, smoking and vaping.
Year 9
Students are exploring the risks associated with gangs, crime and violence. The influences of peers and the pressures that may come with that, how to support a friend who may find themselves in negative relationships and why some people may be drawn into risky behaviours are discussed as well as being supported by an assembly from an outside speaker. Lifestyle choices and drugs and vaping are specifically explored to support students’ health and wellbeing.
Year 10
Students have been reflecting on their work experience placements by sharing their experiences and feedback with one another. They have also been completing their workbooks and evidence in preparation for their World of Work certification. They will then move on to considering role models and aspirations before revisiting online safety and appropriate online material.
Year 11
Students complete their RSHE program this term ahead of their exams after they spend some time reflecting on their RSHE journey throughout their time at Mountbatten from Year 7 to Year 11. They will discuss some sensitive topics around pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion as well as positive relationships and consent. We hope that our RSHE curriculum will help our students stay healthy and happy during and long after their exams.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
Please note all calls both to and from the school are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.
