Mrs S Whitfield - Acting Assistant Headteacher

This week, Mountbatten marked VE Day with real style and spirit. It was a joy to see staff in costume, students engaging with VE-themed lessons, and our brilliant musicians creating a nostalgic atmosphere around the site. Thank you to everyone involved for making it so special. Please see a couple of pictures below - click on the button to see more!

A huge well done to our Year 11 students who have shown such maturity and focus in their practical exams so far in PE, Dance, Art, Drama and MFL. Your calm and committed approach has been a credit to you.

As the warmer weather draws more of us outdoors, it’s lovely to see students enjoying the school field at break and lunchtime. Just a quick reminder though: please watch out for ticks. After being outside, take a moment to:

  • ✅ Check for ticks (especially around ankles and knees)
  • ✅ Shake out your clothes
  • ✅ Let a teacher or parent know if you spot one

Let’s keep enjoying the sunshine safely!

The Junior Maths Challenge is a 60-minute, 25 multiple-choice question challenge. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think. The results will be sent to the school by mid-May, when we will distribute certificates to students and give details to any students who qualify for further rounds.

Romsey Young Carers

Romsey Young Carers and our Mountbatten Young Carers presented an assembly to Year 7 this week to raise awareness of what it is to be a Young Carer and how Romsey Young Carers support them. They shared their experiences of the charity and the roles and responsibilities they take on at home to support their family members. Students were encouraged to reach out to our school staff of Romsey Young Carers if they think they are potentially a caregiver at home.

Mr Cox presented the staff of Romsey Young Carers a cheque for £3,278.38 after the impressive fundraising our students, parents and staff supported in the spring term. The non-school uniform day, Valentine's heart sales and donations and the PE end-of-season tournament (raising £500.00) demonstrated the kindness and community spirit we are so proud of at Mountbatten.

Students had the opportunity to look around the vast compound and learnt more about the different job roles available at the company. The highlight of the trip was a quick climb into one of the shunter train cabins!

Year 8 Sparsholt Assembly

Throughout the year, students have been learning about different careers and pathways, and this week students were visited by Sparsholt College to link some of these careers to apprenticeships and what Sparsholt has to offer.

RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.

In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.

  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) (Secondary) - GOV.UK
  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education - GOV.UK
  • Understanding Relationships, Sex and Health Education at your child's secondary school: a guide for parents - GOV.UK

Year 7

Students have been discussing what a diverse society looks like and what the protected characteristics of the equalities act are. This has led to identifying and challenging stereotypes and what discrimination is. Students are also exploring what prejudice and bias looks like within the media and how they can research and find their own facts. Students are also identifying who their role models are and what influences they have upon them, as well as how to manage peer pressure. This leads on to exploring how to keep safe within society and within relationships.

Year 8

Students have been busy identifying what constitutes a healthy relationship and discussing how to form positive and healthy new friendships. This moves onto exploring their online activity and behaviours with the aim to reduce online risks and develop their digital resilience. Students also explore the importance of human rights and responsibilities within society, the school environment and the workplace and how to challenge discrimination. They will also discuss lifestyle choices by considering the risks and effects of alcohol, smoking and vaping.

Year 9

Students are exploring the risks associated with gangs, crime and violence. The influences of peers and the pressures that may come with that, how to support a friend who may find themselves in negative relationships and why some people may be drawn into risky behaviours are discussed as well as being supported by an assembly from an outside speaker. Lifestyle choices and drugs and vaping are specifically explored to support students’ health and wellbeing.

Year 10

Students have been reflecting on their work experience placements by sharing their experiences and feedback with one another. They have also been completing their workbooks and evidence in preparation for their World of Work certification. They will then move on to considering role models and aspirations before revisiting online safety and appropriate online material.

Year 11

Students complete their RSHE program this term ahead of their exams after they spend some time reflecting on their RSHE journey throughout their time at Mountbatten from Year 7 to Year 11. They will discuss some sensitive topics around pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion as well as positive relationships and consent. We hope that our RSHE curriculum will help our students stay healthy and happy during and long after their exams.

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.
