Mrs N Harper - Director of RSHE & Safeguarding

It is with immense pride that I write about our Year 11 students, who have shown exceptional maturity and focus during the first two weeks of their GCSE examinations. Their positive attitude and determination have been remarkable through this challenging period. Our Year 11s have approached each exam with composure and dedication, arriving prepared and supporting one another through what is undoubtedly a stressful time. Their conduct in and around the examination venues has been exemplary, demonstrating their maturity and readiness for the next chapter of their academic journey.

Today's emotional farewell, with the traditional shirt signing and sharing of leavers messages, was testament to the special bonds and friendships formed during their time with us. The joy and camaraderie evident during these celebrations were a fitting tribute to their years at our school.

As we approach the half-term break, I wish our Year 11s a well-deserved rest to recharge before their remaining examinations. Remember to balance revision with relaxation during this time.

For the rest of our school community, I hope the break provides an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate. I look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready to tackle the final stretch of the academic year with renewed energy and focus. The summer term holds many exciting opportunities, and I know our students will return eager to engage with their learning and finish the year with continued excellence.

Hay Fever

As we step into the vibrant blossoming season of spring, we want to ensure that every child at our school can fully embrace the wonders of this time. However, with the beauty of spring comes the challenge of hay fever for many of our students.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, can cause discomfort and disrupt learning if not managed effectively. Symptoms such as sneezing, itching, nasal congestion and watery eyes can impact your child’s ability to focus and participate in class activities.

To support our students during this season, we kindly ask parents to ensure that your child has access to appropriate hay fever medication.  Whether it’s antihistamines, nasal sprays, or eye drops, having these medications readily available can make a world of difference in managing symptoms and allowing your child to thrive academically and socially.

Additionally, please remind your child to practise good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and avoid rubbing their eyes, to minimise exposure to pollen and other allergens.

Thank you for helping us to create a healthy and supportive learning environment for all our students.  Together, we can ensure that every child can fully enjoy the wonders of spring without the discomfort of hay fever holding them back.

Direct4logos - Closure over bank holiday weekend

Direct4logos will be closing at 2.00pm on Friday 23 May and will re-open at 9.30am on Tuesday 27 May.

#So.me - Invitation to participate in daily wellbeing and social media study

We have an exciting opportunity for students to take part in cutting-edge wellbeing research. The #So.Me team at the University of Manchester are conducting a study to understand how young people feel over the course of two weeks. They will be sent daily wellbeing questionnaires via a secure smartphone app outside of school hours. Alongside this they will ask some questions about social media use and experience. Students aged 12-16 who use social media are eligible to participate.

The study is running between now and mid-July 2025. Taking part will take approximately 2-3 hours of your child’s time in total over the course of 2 weeks. They’ll receive an Amazon e-voucher as a thank you for taking part.

Your child will be part of a group of hundreds of young people across the UK and will be critical to ensuring that young people’s views and experiences are central to wellbeing research.

The study has already been introduced to students during school. If your child is interested in taking part, please click on the button below to read the full study information and provide consent. You will need to provide parental consent and your child will need to provide assent for them to be able to take part.

#So.me parent/carer consent & information

More information about the wider research can be found at www.so-me-study.org.

Year 7 & 8 trip to Doughty Engineering

Students visited Doughty Engineering in Ringwood this week and had an excellent time exploring the site and learning more about the company.

Doughty Engineering is a leading manufacturer of rigging, suspension and lifting equipment for the film, TV and theatre industry and students were shown the different steps needed to produce the various components.

Careers in Horse Racing

The National Horse Racing College has released their new prospectus, highlighting courses at the college, benefits and support in the horse racing industry, progress etc. The prospectus can be viewed here.

The fully residential Foundation Course is the perfect entry point if students wish to pursue a hands-on career in the British horse racing industry. No equine experience required, there are rider or non-rider pathways to choose from. Courses start every 4 weeks. Students can eventually progress to a level 2 Equine Groom apprenticeship. Details for apprenticeships can be found here.

The racing industry is more progressive than the general/competition equine sector in terms of its employment of grooms. Details for racing groom pay, benefits and support can be found here.

Super-Curricular activities

Most students and parents will be familiar with the term extra-curricular activities. Recently, a new term has emerged: super-curricular activities which are favoured by high-ranked universities and employers which see large applications for their job vacancies and graduate programmes. Super-curricular activities are completed outside of the classroom but are related to a student’s interest or area of study. Please see links below for further information:

RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.

In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.

  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) (Secondary) - GOV.UK
  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education - GOV.UK
  • Understanding Relationships, Sex and Health Education at your child's secondary school: a guide for parents - GOV.UK

Year 7

Students have been discussing what a diverse society looks like and what the protected characteristics of the equalities act are. This has led to identifying and challenging stereotypes and what discrimination is. Students are also exploring what prejudice and bias looks like within the media and how they can research and find their own facts. Students are also identifying who their role models are and what influences they have upon them, as well as how to manage peer pressure. This leads on to exploring how to keep safe within society and within relationships.

Year 8

Students have been busy identifying what constitutes a healthy relationship and discussing how to form positive and healthy new friendships. This moves onto exploring their online activity and behaviours with the aim to reduce online risks and develop their digital resilience. Students also explore the importance of human rights and responsibilities within society, the school environment and the workplace and how to challenge discrimination. They will also discuss lifestyle choices by considering the risks and effects of alcohol, smoking and vaping.

Year 9

Students are exploring the risks associated with gangs, crime and violence. The influences of peers and the pressures that may come with that, how to support a friend who may find themselves in negative relationships and why some people may be drawn into risky behaviours are discussed as well as being supported by an assembly from an outside speaker. Lifestyle choices and drugs and vaping are specifically explored to support students’ health and wellbeing.

Year 10

Students have been reflecting on their work experience placements by sharing their experiences and feedback with one another. They have also been completing their workbooks and evidence in preparation for their World of Work certification. They will then move on to considering role models and aspirations before revisiting online safety and appropriate online material.

Year 11

Students complete their RSHE program this term ahead of their exams after they spend some time reflecting on their RSHE journey throughout their time at Mountbatten from Year 7 to Year 11. They will discuss some sensitive topics around pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion as well as positive relationships and consent. We hope that our RSHE curriculum will help our students stay healthy and happy during and long after their exams.

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.
