Mr C Martin - Interim Senior Deputy Headteacher

We are entering a busy but wonderful phase of the school year when we celebrate everything which is so great about The Mountbatten School and we are reminded of the natural transition of both our students and staff through the school.

This week we have had the wonderful Summer Concert followed immediately by the Founder’s day. These are both opportunities for everyone to see the very best of our school with our outstanding musicians and music staff wowing us with their skill whilst also coming together to remember Lord Mountbatten and those ex-students who we have sadly lost too soon. A really special pair of events.

This week we have welcomed the Year 5 prospective students and parents to our open evening, an evening where I enjoy going around seeing our staff show off the school. This is quickly followed next week with a day when we welcome our new staff starting in September and another day when we welcome the Year 6 students who will be new Mountbatten students in the new academic year.

We are also wishing those who are departing farewell next week with our Year 11 celebrating at their Prom. The students always put on a show with their outfits and cars as they get ready to go off to make their own futures; we look forward to celebrating their results with them in August.

Click the drop-down menus below to find out more about different careers opportunities coming up for our students.

British Army Apprenticeships

The British Army offers an array of apprenticeships across a wide range of career areas. They are currently conducting a survey on how they can better support parents/carers and students with the application process and general apprenticeship knowledge and are inviting you to take part in a very short survey. If you have 5 minutes to spare, please consider taking part: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/southampton-parents-the-mountbatten-school

Careers in the Railway Industry

This week Year 8 students have been learning about careers in the railway industry. To encourage a younger workforce, companies have put together some fantastic resources to showcase the large variety of careers available.

Careers insight – Crime Scene Investigation

Last week, Year 8 students learnt about careers in crime scene investigation, forensic science and criminology. To give the careers lesson some real-life context, we invited former student Georgia this week to speak to students about her career as a crime scene investigator. Georgia shared with students some of the hurdles she had to overcome to reach her dream job, how her previous experience working with various police forces helped her gain vital experience, and the importance of not giving up.

Year 10 Taster Day Barton Peveril

On Friday, we took over 200 students to the Barton Peveril taster day to give students the opportunity to try out a variety of courses the college has to offer, as well as experiencing college life, to help them prepare choosing their post-16 options. Further taster days with different colleges have been scheduled over the next few weeks.

RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.

In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.

  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) (Secondary) - GOV.UK
  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education - GOV.UK
  • Understanding Relationships, Sex and Health Education at your child's secondary school: a guide for parents - GOV.UK

Year 7

Students have been discussing what a diverse society looks like and what the protected characteristics of the equalities act are. This has led to identifying and challenging stereotypes and what discrimination is. Students are also exploring what prejudice and bias looks like within the media and how they can research and find their own facts. Students are also identifying who their role models are and what influences they have upon them, as well as how to manage peer pressure. This leads on to exploring how to keep safe within society and within relationships.

Year 8

Students have been busy identifying what constitutes a healthy relationship and discussing how to form positive and healthy new friendships. This moves onto exploring their online activity and behaviours with the aim to reduce online risks and develop their digital resilience. Students also explore the importance of human rights and responsibilities within society, the school environment and the workplace and how to challenge discrimination. They will also discuss lifestyle choices by considering the risks and effects of alcohol, smoking and vaping.

Year 9

Students are exploring the risks associated with gangs, crime and violence. The influences of peers and the pressures that may come with that, how to support a friend who may find themselves in negative relationships and why some people may be drawn into risky behaviours are discussed as well as being supported by an assembly from an outside speaker. Lifestyle choices and drugs and vaping are specifically explored to support students’ health and wellbeing.

Year 10

Students have been reflecting on their work experience placements by sharing their experiences and feedback with one another. They have also been completing their workbooks and evidence in preparation for their World of Work certification. They will then move on to considering role models and aspirations before revisiting online safety and appropriate online material.

Year 11

Students complete their RSHE program this term ahead of their exams after they spend some time reflecting on their RSHE journey throughout their time at Mountbatten from Year 7 to Year 11. They will discuss some sensitive topics around pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion as well as positive relationships and consent. We hope that our RSHE curriculum will help our students stay healthy and happy during and long after their exams.

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.

Change of time - Hatha Yoga

We’ve listened to your feedback and made a change to our yoga class start time.

Many of you told us that a slightly later start would make it easier to get to class after work or other commitments. So, from Monday 16 June, our Hatha Yoga class will begin at the new time of 6.30pm.

We hope this small shift makes a big difference in helping you carve out time for yourself each week. Whether you’re arriving straight from work or easing into your evening, you’ll still enjoy the same welcoming atmosphere, calming practice and expert guidance – just with a little more breathing room.

Thank you for helping us shape a class that works for you. We hope to see you on the mat soon!
