We have reached that time of year again where we have started plans for our whole school Mountbatten Sports Day, a significant event on our whole school calendar!
I am pleased to announce that this will be held on Wednesday 16 July on the school field. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their athletic skills, sportsmanship and team spirit as they accumulate points for their House Team.
Students have been selecting their events this week during tutor time. We will then be offering students the opportunity to attend our athletics club on Wednesdays after school over the next couple of weeks to prepare for their event.
It’s important that your child attends Sports Day in their PE kit and remains in this for the whole day. They must bring plenty of water and ensure they bring sun protection as they will be outside for approximately 3 hours over the course of the day. Please ensure that your child does not attend Sports Day with face paint or glitter at the start of the day, as they will be attending normal lessons in the morning.
Students will be attending tutor and lessons as normal from period 1 to 4 (apart from period 3 and 4 each being 5 minutes shorter). However, if your child is competing in a field event, a middle distance run, or a track heat during the morning, they will come out of lessons to do so. Each year group will participate in the heats during a designated period, which can be found below:
Year 7 - Period 1
Year 8 - Period 2
Year 9 - Period 3
Year 10 - Period 4
If your child is not participating in a morning event, they will remain in lessons as normal. All students will be outside supporting the finalists in the afternoon.
There will also be charity stalls in place for the afternoon, so please encourage your child to bring in a small amount of cash to support these.
All other key information regarding the event has been shared with your child.
We are looking forward to another successful Sports Day!

Congratulations...
Congratulations and thank you to all those who performed in the school’s summer concert and the Founder's Day Service. Thank you for all the hard work and dedication to making both events a resounding success.
Congratulations to Saxy Brass who made their solo debut performance at the One Romsey Festival, a fantastic celebration of unity within the community celebrating the arts and all the things that make us so wonderfully diverse. The feedback from Romsey’s Mayor - Cllr. Russell Theron and all those who attended has been glowing; we look forward to the next one!
Stay Safe and Enjoy Hampshire’s Waters This Summer - Follow the Water Safety Code
As the temperatures rise, families across Hampshire are making the most of the sunshine - whether it’s splashing in the garden paddling pool, exploring local lakes and rivers, or spending a day at the beach.
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it’s also important to stay vigilant around water. Warmer weather is directly linked to a rise in accidental drownings, making water safety more crucial than ever.
Tragically, drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children. In 2024, there were 136 accidental drownings across the UK, with the highest number of fatalities occurring in the months of May and August. Male children and young people aged 10 to 19 were identified as the highest group for accidental drownings (Waid 2024 Summary for England).
Drowning is Preventable
Children of all ages should be taught how to stay safe around water. This includes understanding the risks not only at the beach or in rivers and lakes, but also at home - where paddling pools, hot tubs and ponds can also pose a danger.
The Water Safety Code provides essential and easy-to-remember information to help children and families plan for their activity and understand what they should do in an emergency:
To help families enjoy the summer safely, the Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership has created a Water Safety Toolkit that provides advice on the Water Safety Code and signposting to other organisations that can help in educating families and children on the dangers of water.

Year 10 Itchen College Taster Day
This week it was Itchen College’s turn to host our students for their taster day. We’ve been blessed with plenty of sunshine and the campus was buzzing with excitement from the students. Our students conducted themselves very well and are to be commended for their commitment to take part in the taster day during the school's INSET Day.
Year 9 Longdown Activity Farm
Students spent an afternoon at the farm to learn about the business operations, how the animals are cared for and had the opportunity to speak with different staff members about their experience working with animals. Students agreed that the highlights of the visit were feeding the goats and holding the chicken. A big thank you to farmer Bryan and his team for their warm welcome and for taking their time to explain everything in great detail.
Year 8 Careers Insight into Artificial Intelligence
BAE Systems, The Royal Air Force and The Royal Navy brought their popular roadshow to school to share with students the opportunities AI can bring, alongside a variety of different careers. Lexi the robot dog was a firm favourite with the students, as well as producing a song and creating a music video using AI software. Students were also made aware of some of the dangers they may experience with the advancement of technology, such as deepfake content.
Parental Engagement
The Careers Department is currently looking at different ways to increase engagement opportunities for parents so that they can better support their child’s careers education journey. We will now email you prior to your child’s meeting with the Careers Adviser to provide you with resources to support any conversations you may wish to have with them about their future pathways.
RSHE lessons have continued to be taught each week in tutor groups. Do ask your child what they have been learning about and encourage them to ask further questions.
In lesson, teachers use a range of oracy-based strategies, including a Philosophy for Children approach. This is where students are encouraged to think more deeply through critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking skills. Below are links to more information regarding RSHE.
Students have been discussing what a diverse society looks like and what the protected characteristics of the equalities act are. This has led to identifying and challenging stereotypes and what discrimination is. Students are also exploring what prejudice and bias looks like within the media and how they can research and find their own facts. Students are also identifying who their role models are and what influences they have upon them, as well as how to manage peer pressure. This leads on to exploring how to keep safe within society and within relationships.
Year 8
Students have been busy identifying what constitutes a healthy relationship and discussing how to form positive and healthy new friendships. This moves onto exploring their online activity and behaviours with the aim to reduce online risks and develop their digital resilience. Students also explore the importance of human rights and responsibilities within society, the school environment and the workplace and how to challenge discrimination. They will also discuss lifestyle choices by considering the risks and effects of alcohol, smoking and vaping.
Year 9
Students are exploring the risks associated with gangs, crime and violence. The influences of peers and the pressures that may come with that, how to support a friend who may find themselves in negative relationships and why some people may be drawn into risky behaviours are discussed as well as being supported by an assembly from an outside speaker. Lifestyle choices and drugs and vaping are specifically explored to support students’ health and wellbeing.
Year 10
Students have been reflecting on their work experience placements by sharing their experiences and feedback with one another. They have also been completing their workbooks and evidence in preparation for their World of Work certification. They will then move on to considering role models and aspirations before revisiting online safety and appropriate online material.
Year 11
Students complete their RSHE program this term ahead of their exams after they spend some time reflecting on their RSHE journey throughout their time at Mountbatten from Year 7 to Year 11. They will discuss some sensitive topics around pregnancy, miscarriage and abortion as well as positive relationships and consent. We hope that our RSHE curriculum will help our students stay healthy and happy during and long after their exams.
Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.
Please note all calls both to and from the school are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.
