Mrs S Whitfield - Assistant Headteacher

It has been another busy and celebratory week at Mountbatten!

This week, we were delighted to welcome Year 6 students into our school for our Open Mornings. It was wonderful to see so many families exploring Mountbatten, visiting lessons and getting a real feel for life in our school community. A huge thank you to our students and staff who helped make our visitors feel so welcome. We look forward to welcoming more Year 6 students and their families to our final Open Morning next Wednesday.

Our Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh students have been out completing their expeditions, demonstrating teamwork, resilience and determination along the way. We are incredibly proud of them for taking on the challenge and supporting one another throughout.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming back some of last year’s Year 11 students for our GCSE Awards Evening. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our fabulous leavers and recognise their hard work, commitment and successes during their time at Mountbatten.

You may begin to notice some changes to our social media over the coming weeks. As the digital world continues to evolve, particularly with developments in AI, we are reviewing how we share photographs and celebrate school life online to ensure that safeguarding remains at the heart of what we do. You may see fewer front-facing photographs of students and more images that capture learning and school life through action shots, activities and the brilliant work taking place every day. We will, of course, continue to share and celebrate all the wonderful things happening across our school community.

Annual flu vaccination

The NHS School Age Immunisation Service is coming to Mountbatten on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 November to give students their annual flu vaccination and would like your consent to vaccinate your child.

How to respond

It’s important to let the team know whether you do or do not want your child to have the vaccination. It will take less than 5 minutes to respond using the link below.

Flu Vaccination Form

https://www.hiowhealthcareimmunisations.co.uk/Forms/Flu?schoolcode=SH136640

You need to respond by 10am on 12 November. Please enter the Year group that your child is currently in.

If you cannot use the online form, you can respond over the phone using the contact details below.

About the children’s flu vaccine

The vaccine protects against flu, which can cause serious health problems such as bronchitis and pneumonia. It is recommended for children from Reception to Year 11.

Find out more about the children’s flu vaccine on NHS.UK

You can also find a range of information resources about the vaccine on GOV.UK, including in other languages.

How the vaccine is given

Most children are given the vaccine as a nasal spray. This is a quick and painless spray up the nose and offers the best protection against flu.

The nasal spray contains a small amount of gelatine derived from pigs (porcine gelatine). If your child does not use gelatine products, or cannot have the nasal spray for medical reasons, you can choose an alternative injected vaccine that has no gelatine or any other animal product. You can request this in the consent form. This vaccine will be given at the session in school. Please contact either the school immunisation team or your school if you want to be present for this.

Find out more about the use of gelatine in the flu vaccine (including the views of faith communities)

Careers Trips and Insight Events

We are keen to encourage students to make the most of the opportunities available to them. Sometimes, students put their names forward but then change their minds if their friends decide not to take part. We would encourage them to be brave, step outside their comfort zone and embrace these experiences as opportunities to discover something new. As a parent of the recent Southampton Boat Show attendee commented: “It has inspired my child to look further into careers in maritime, and she is now interested in exploring this sector and the opportunities it could offer.”

A Year 11 student recently commented: ‘I just wanted to email you to say thank you for posting the Get Into Law Seminar details as I attended the session and actually found it both very helpful and informative. It has also opened my eyes to other possible careers with "Young Professionals" and provided me with the knowledge on how to do it so thank you!’

Year 11 Insight into Banking with Lloyds

At this event, students will participate in workshops, network with their people, and hear about all of the key application deadlines for this year’s opportunities. They’ll hear straight from senior leaders about their journey, as well as recent apprentices and graduates and the advice they wish they’d had when starting out. Date: 6 October, 5-6pm. More details can be found in the Careers Google Classroom. To sign up, please click here.

BAE Systems Maritime and Land Defence Solutions

Our five-day virtual work experience programme offers an exciting introduction to early careers opportunities at BAE Systems, one of the world's leading defence, aerospace and security organisations. With opportunities spanning engineering and business services across sites throughout the UK, participants will gain a real understanding of what a future career with BAE Systems could look like. Please click here to view flyer for more information.

Students must check in with Miss Jupp / Ms Shakya before applying! Application deadline is 12 October or sooner if places are filled. To apply, click here.

Y9 Visit to Southampton Boat Show

Students had a fantastic day at the Southampton Boat Show, discovering the wide range of exciting careers available across the maritime industry. From exploring different areas of the sector to hearing about future opportunities, the visit gave students a valuable insight into where a career at sea, or on shore, could take them. And, of course, getting out on the water for a boat ride was the icing on the cake!

Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) programme is delivered by form tutors who know their students well, creating a safe and supportive environment for exploring sensitive topics. This familiar relationship enables open dialogue and builds trust, allowing students to engage more confidently with challenging subject matter.

At the heart of our programme is an oracy-based methodology that prioritises discussion, debate and collaborative exploration. Rather than simply receiving information, students are encouraged to express their thoughts and questions in a supportive environment while listening respectfully to diverse viewpoints and experiences. They engage in meaningful dialogue with peers and their form tutor, developing confidence in articulating their ideas and concerns whilst practising essential communication skills that will serve them throughout life.

Our approach fosters critical thinking skills by encouraging students to question assumptions and examine different perspectives. They learn to analyse information from multiple sources and viewpoints, considering the complexity of real-world situations and relationships. Students develop skills in evaluating the consequences of different choices and behaviours while reflecting thoughtfully on their own values and beliefs.

Through structured discussions and collaborative activities, students develop respect for diversity in all its forms, including different backgrounds, beliefs and lifestyles. Students learn to disagree respectfully while maintaining positive relationships and become aware of their own biases, recognising the importance of remaining open-minded.

Our five-year programme follows a progressive and spiral curriculum structure from Year 7 to Year 11, with topics revisited at increasing levels of complexity and maturity. This approach ensures that students build upon prior learning while developing deeper understanding as they mature.

This comprehensive approach ensures our students develop not only knowledge and understanding, but also the communication skills, emotional intelligence and respect for others that will serve them well as they navigate their relationships and make important life decisions.

RSHE Autumn Dates

Year 7

This term, Year 7 will be looking at how to deal with starting secondary school, dealing with change and how to grow self-confidence. They will also explore how friendships may change, form and develop as well as how communication is a valuable tool to manage friendships. This progresses on to looking at what it means to show empathy, compassion and care. How to have a healthy lifestyle and making good choices regarding diet, energy drinks and other substances is discussed, as well as the importance of good sleep hygiene and links to positive wellbeing.

Year 8

Year 8 start the term by identifying their personal strengths and achievements. They will then explore personal safety and move on to looking at the meaning of discrimination and prejudice, including misogyny and misandry,  and what protective characteristics are. October will bring discussions about Black History Month and the impact of stereotypes on individuals and communities. This leads into exploring what healthy relationships look like, how to recognise unhealthy relationships and establishing healthy boundaries and consent.

Year 9

Year 9 will be looking at what a healthy relationship is and how to recognise the features of them. They will explore the meaning of commitment within a range of different relationships and dynamics including exploring families, marriage and changes within relationships and families. Healthy lifestyles, positive mental health and wellbeing and positive self-esteem will be discussed and the impact of the digital world on these factors will finish the term. Students will also participate in an emergency aid workshop.

Year 10

Year 10 will be discussing the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing and the actions that can support this including how to reframe negative thinking and have a mindful outlook. Discussions will then focus on healthy lifestyles and changes that occur during adolescence.

Year 11

Year 11 will be exploring the importance of sleep and managing pressure and emotions, including in exams. This leads into a unit on healthy lifestyles, medical choices, substance abuse and body adjustments. Challenging stereotypes and discussing the changes in the voting system and politics will prepare students for the future as well as a practical workshop in emergency aid to give up to date first aid experience.

Should your child wish to seek support related to any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support Team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits.

Childline also offers a range of support and resources.
