The second half of the Spring Term is always an uplifting time of the school year. Not only do the daffodils that were planted by ‘The Golden Year’ start to flutter and dance in the breeze, the Spring Term heralds the new beginnings for many of the students. For our youngsters in Year 8 and Year 9, it’s the time of choosing the options that lead to their final GCSE pathways. For the Year 10 students, it’s thinking about stepping up and how they can contribute to the school community as a Prefect. As for the Year 11 students, they enter the period of mock exams and emerge enlightened beings with a better understanding of the journey remaining to be best prepared for the exams in the summer. I wish you much joy as we move towards lighter mornings, evenings and more sunshine.

Modern Railway Club
A message from Mr Smart...
A big well done to the Mountbatten Model Railway Club members who represented the school at the Romsey and district model railway exhibition at Crosfield hall on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March 2022. The students were a credit to the school and we received many positive comments from the public and the organisers of the show which over 1,200 people visited, including the Mayor of Romsey. The students were in charge of a layout and had to help younger students work the controls which ran the trains. Students also had to work on the door greeting the public and giving out programmes. Their manners and behaviour was impeccable throughout the weekend.

National Careers Week - Letter to Parents/Carers and Students
To coincide with National Careers Week 2022, Michelle Donelan, Minister of State for Further and Higher Education, is writing to students and parents about the education, training and work choices available to young people after they finish their GCSEs and once they turn 18.
Please see the letters below for students, and for parents/carers.
Young Carers went to Brockenhurst College this week for a careers convention which concluded with a tour of the college. Students spoke to a variety of employers and further education establishments to help them with their post-16 choices.
Former student Kate Norris came to school to talk to students about careers in law. Kate is currently a commercial lawyer for Irwin Mitchell and is soon moving to London to work for the BBC as an in-house lawyer. The event was well attended and all students who participated have received achievement points.
Josie Love and Chris Shank, both from the University of Southampton, visited Year 10 MFL students to talk about their careers at the university and how being able to speak additional languages has benefited them in their careers journey.
Year 7 and 8 students took part in an ad-hoc careers lesson this week to celebrate NCW in order to learn more about themselves, their skills and their aspirations as well as the changing world of work. They have also been invited to take part in the ‘They did what?!’ competition, where they have to match members of staff with their previous careers. Amongst us we have a former DJ, Au Pair, Nordic Walking Instructor, transport planner, sewage engineer, paramedic, fashion PR, copy editor, lifestyle consultant, statistician, church minister and many more.

Top Tip
Not only is it important to consider how far our food travels to get to our plate, but it is also worth considering what we choose to put on our plate. Look at the infographic below to see the carbon footprint of different protein sources. One way that we can lower our carbon footprint is by ensuring that we are consuming a variety of protein sources over the week. It is a small change that can make a huge difference.
