Mr R Davenport - Assistant Headteacher

Over this week and the next we will be supporting our Year 11 students as they embark on their mock exams. The legacy of Covid means that many of our students have little experience of sitting formal exams, so it’s really important that these exams are as realistic as possible and that students are as prepared as possible and take them seriously. Just like a boxer who trains with sparring partners to mimic the real event, the more seriously students take these exams, the more benefit they will get from the process. Part of this preparation comes from school of course and a lot of time and effort will have been spent in lessons to this end. Another very important part comes from work done at home and we really appreciate the support we have had from parents and carers in making sure that their child revises well and attends each exam with the equipment that they need.

 Website Updates

We have updated several areas of our website to help support and inform parents and carers on a range of topics.

Year 11 now have a dedicated area to provide information about the last few months at school and includes a really useful section on how to revise.

Our 3D Curriculum characteristics and qualities are used to reward students on epraise, we now have a section that provides an area on the website that explains our 3D Curriculum in more detail.

We also wanted to signpost external support and resources for students and parents/carers around a wide range of topics and issues such as, mental health, self harm, Internet safety, eating disorders, self harm and bereavement. This can all be found under the pastoral section of our website, alongside National Online Safety Guides and support available in school.

Parents please read: Andrew Tate

You may be aware from recent media coverage that there have been concerns raised regarding social media influencers, not solely, but in particular when it comes to their potential impact on boys and young men.

You may already be aware of one such individual, Andrew Tate, who describes himself as 'absolutely a misogynist’. There have been a number of recent stories which have related to his recent arrest and detainment in Romania on suspicion of human trafficking, rape and forming an organised crime group. It has become evident that many young men and boys have not been put off following Tate or being influenced by his negative messages. We are aware that some students are aware of Tate and the opinions he shares online.

Whilst some of Tate’s posts appear to focus on wellbeing and mental health, they are combined with deeply misogynistic, sexist, homophobic and violent material including:

  • Saying that rape victims put themselves “in a position to be raped” and “must bear some responsibility”, claiming most do this for advancement in ‘opportunity’.
  • Claiming mental illness makes people ‘weak’ and that depression ‘isn’t real’.
  • Promoting gendered violence and misogyny on his podcast and posts about relationships.
  • Saying "I'm a realist and when you're a realist you're sexist. There's no way you can be rooted in reality and not be sexist."
  • Saying that there is no such thing as an independent female and that women belong to men.

It is clear that the content of Tate’s posts are directly in conflict with the messages and values we, at The Mountbatten School, believe should be shared with our community. We believe he portrays a negative role model for young men and boys and has shared very troubling stereotypes about women, those struggling with mental health and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Tate’s social media content has been banned from many social media platforms but there is still a possibility that your children will come across these messages when online. We would urge you to take the time to regularly monitor internet activity at home, as well as have open and honest discussions on this and other related topics.

This is an important safeguarding exercise that we know parents and carers will take seriously. As a school, the RSHE curriculum and our staff training are using strategies to educate our students about the dangers of Tate’s messages.

If you would like to talk to your child about this issue, this article from 'HOPE not Hate' will provide you with some additional information and context as to who Andrew Tate is. Bold Voices have produced an informative and helpful guide for parents to help them talk to their children about his posts and messages. Safer Schools have also provided further information and advice.

If you are concerned about this or have any other worries relating to your child, please contact their tutor. Students can also report any concerns they have for themselves, or others, using TooToot.

Top Tip

Fairtrade fortnight takes place between 27 February and 12 March this year. In 2023, the focus is on making the small switch to buying Fairtrade products to support the protection of the future of some of our most-loved food and for the future of our planet. A headline dominating the news this week has been regarding the food shortages we are seeing on our supermarket shelves. With the rapid changes in our climate, our agricultural lands are unable to adapt quick enough which means we are due to see more of these types of food shortages in the future where we import food from countries that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Keep an eye out for the Fairtrade logo when you are next doing your shopping and know that when you buy these products, you are supporting local farmers around the world and making food production more sustainable. You can find out more about Fairtrade here.

RSHE (Relationships, Sex, & Health Education) is taught by Tutors to their Tutor Group once a week. Tutors deliver discussion based lessons which allows our students to explore a range of topics to effectively prepare our young people for success in the modern world with the knowledge, understanding and desire to keep themselves safe, happy, healthy, respectful and tolerant. Our aim is to empower them with the resilience and confidence to make a difference to their own and others’ future.

Year 7

This half-term Year 7 have been looking at how to lead healthy lifestyles by considering what health and fitness is before identifying the need for good food, sleep and exercise habits. Students have also explored the impacts of energy drinks and caffeine based drinks on health and fitness and the law.

Students have just started to look at the body’s physical changes during puberty and this will continue after half-term. They will then move onto the importance of sleep and the benefits of good sleep hygiene. The half-term will then finish with a look at how the virtual world can impact how you feel about yourself and what behaviours are and are not appropriate online.

Year 8

This half-term Year 8 have been exploring the benefits of healthy lifestyles and good physical health as well as how to maintain positive mental health and wellbeing when using social media. Media bias and different media sources has also been covered so we can encourage students to consider what influences they may be exposed to and how they can start to consider the validity of information.

Next half-term Year 8 are looking at mental health and wellbeing and different ways of coping or managing their feelings and emotions. They are encouraged to identify what strategies they respond positively to and why self-care is important.

Year 9

Year 9 started the New Year considering what supports healthy living and how they can lead a healthy lifestyle. They have then considered what body image is and how this can be influenced and affected by internal and external factors. This then led onto covering mental health and wellbeing. Year 9 have explored what mental health is, what the different stages of mental health are and what strategies can support good mental health and wellbeing.

Next half-term Year 9 move onto completing a practical workshop on Emergency First Aid. The students who demonstrate a good practical understanding of the emergency aid will be certificated through St John’s Ambulance. This half-term also includes the topic of consent and how to avoid assumptions as well as freedom and capacity to consent. The law around consent and intimate relationships is shared with students also.

Year 10

Year 10 started the term with a recap on healthy living and positive lifestyle choices.

They then went on to identify what a role model is and how this can support personal progress and decision-making. This then led into exploring the impacts of drug and alcohol use. This will continue into the next half-term before they start to prepare for their work experience placements.

Year 11

Year 11 recapped healthy living before moving onto some practical emergency aid training. Students who engaged well with the sessions and demonstrated good practical understanding of CPR will be certificated by St John’s ambulance.

Students have also explored contraception and sexual health. The different methods of contraception and their efficacy have provided to ensure students are as informed.  Students have been signposted to some external agencies that offer support. Youth In Romsey offer support and guidance and information can be found on their website, where details of further services can also be found, as well as what they offer.

Next half-term, students will prepare for mock exams and then revisit consent, explore coercion and consider risky behaviours.

Should your child wish to seek support in any of these topics or about anything else that is worrying them, please advise them to speak to their form tutor in the first instance or request some support from our Student Support team by completing the Student Support form on the student area of the school website.

We have our reporting system 'TootToot' where students can report anonymously or with their name.

Other local support can be found at Youth In Romsey and No Limits

Childline also offer a range of support and resources.

Part of the healthy living topics include discussing the need for good sleep habits. Support with teenage sleep can be found at Teen Sleep Hub which is part of The Sleep Charity.

To support with children’s mental health and wellbeing please visit Place2Be's Website.
