Group ELSA

Who is the intervention for?
ELSA is a tailored intervention, largely available to students in Years 7 to 9. The intervention is designed for students who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing, friendships, issues such as anxiety or low self-esteem.

What does the intervention involve?
Students meet with an ELSA trained teaching assistant in a group of 3-5 to focus on their specific area of need. All students within the group have a shared target to focus on. Sessions are planned in advance and tailored to the needs of the group. This means that no two programmes are the same. However, typical activities include engaging games or icebreakers; drawing or writing about times they felt specific emotions; learning about mindfulness and deep breathing; creating visual representations of their successes and positive qualities; or exploring what makes a good friend and mapping positive relationships. There are many more options available and our ELSA trained teaching assistant always adapts activities to meet the needs of each individual.

When does the intervention take place?
This intervention takes place during timetabled lessons for 6 weeks. After this, students are encouraged to practise the skills they have learnt in their day-to-day life. Where there is significant need, students can be re-referred.
Please be aware that we always have a lengthy waiting list for this intervention.
