Transport to School

Pedestrians

Students who walk to school are asked to keep to the pathways, especially where this will avoid walking on roads.  Certain areas on site have restricted views for motorists.  This is especially true of our "exit" and "entrance" gates and particular care is needed here.

Bicycles

There is a covered secured cycle shelter for 160 bikes.

Students should wear a cycle helmet and the bike should have both front and rear lights.  Students are encouraged to wear some form of luminous bands on their clothing.

Students who cycle to school should dismount at the school gates and wheel their bikes to the shelter.  Whenever students leave the school, they are expected to wheel their bikes to Montfort Road on the Whitenap Estate to avoid going onto the A27.

The majority of cyclists come from the North Baddesley area, and should use the Cycle Track between Highwood crossroads (Botley Road) and the Rownhams Lane junction.

Parents are advised to insure bikes against theft in particular, since there seems to be a pattern of organised theft from secondary schools.  The school cannot bear any responsibility for this.

School Transport

Students within the catchment area, who live more than three miles from the school, are eligible to travel on the school buses provided by the Local Authority.  Students using the bus are unsupervised.  Good behaviour is expected and students must remain seated.  Failure to comply may result in the privilege to travel being withdrawn.  Please note that this transport is provided by Passenger Transport at Hampshire County Council.  If you have any queries regarding this transport, please contact them on 01962 846924.

Students living outside the catchment area are not normally eligible for any assistance with travelling expenses, although, exceptionally, the Local Authority may be able to accommodate some students on their buses as a privilege, rather than as a right.  Application forms and further details may be obtained from the Local Authority Education Office.

The school run two 'Out of Catchment' minibuses, one covering the Sherfield English/Awbridge area and the other Abbotswood and Romsey.  Places on both buses are chargeable and limited.  For enquiries regarding either of these buses, please contact Ms Connors on 01794 502502.

Late Bus

The Mountbatten School currently operates a 'Late Bus Service' (Monday – Friday) in order to cater for students attending after-school clubs and events who are unable to find alternative methods of transport home.  The school will be running two late buses, one will cover Romsey and the surrounding area; the second bus will cover some of the Southampton area (the areas are listed in the Google sign-up sheet).   The buses will park near the Malta building from 16:15 and will leave promptly at 16:30.

Due to the limited number of places on the bus, students must include their name on the ‘Late Bus List’, which is here https://forms.gle/V7Xz7NCmByRChsSs6 and state the name of the club or event they are attending.  It is run on a first come, first served basis with a limit of 15 students per bus. Consequently, it is important that students remember to include their details on the list to ensure they get a lift on the bus – if not they will need to make alternative arrangements with their parents/carers to get home.

If there is no reason for a student to be on the school site after the end of the school day then they will not be allowed to use the late bus as the service is to support those students wishing to attend after-school clubs and events.
