Phonics
Who is the intervention for?
We offer phonics intervention to students in Years 7 to 11 who have phonics gaps.
What does the intervention involve?
Phonics provides intensive, targeted support to address specific gaps in a student’s reading. Students are taught to read sounds, and how to blend the sounds together to read unfamiliar words. Students practise sounds every session until they can read them effortlessly. They read text containing the sounds they know to boost their reading fluency. This also enables students to build on comprehension skills.
When does the intervention take place?
Most students receive two 20 minute sessions per week. Sessions take place during timetabled lessons. Some students are removed from specific lessons temporarily, but students in Years 10 and 11 are taken out of different subjects on a rotation. Students attend the intervention for as long as needed. In some cases, students are ready to move on within a few weeks. Other students require support for much longer.
