Emotional Regulation Skills
Who is the intervention for?
This intervention is for students who struggle to label emotions and manage their emotions.
What does the intervention involve?
This intervention is designed to develop self-regulation skills by helping students understand and manage their emotions effectively. To begin with, students identify and categorise emotions into distinct zones (such as calm, heightened, or overwhelmed states) and build an awareness of their emotional states. Students then progress to exploring the concept of expected versus unexpected behaviours, fostering an understanding of how actions align with social expectations.
The intervention also examines the broader impact of behaviour on others, helping students recognise how their actions can influence relationships and environments. Students learn to identify emotional triggers—situations or events that cause emotional responses—and how these triggers affect their mood and behaviour. The intervention emphasises the development of practical coping strategies, such as deep breathing, mindfulness techniques, or problem-solving skills, to manage emotions constructively. Through guided activities, reflection, and practice, students build the tools needed to self-regulate in various situations, enhancing their emotional resilience and social interactions.
When does the intervention take place?
This intervention takes place during one timetabled lesson for 6 weeks. There are a limited number of slots available as this is dependent on staff and room availability.
